Spring Break in Cancun

Dear Travel Junkies:

Like Las Vegas and Ibiza, Cancun is a party city that never sleeps. The sleepless city draws in millions of visitors every year, especially American Spring Breakers. Spring Break happens every year in March and it is a great deal for cash strapped college students and famous for their wild parties like Girls Gone Wild. The local Mexicans say, “One way in and one way out” and they mean it literally when it comes to getting around in Cancun because there is only a two-way street that takes you into downtown and back out. On the other hand, if you’re looking to relax and exclude yourself from that wild scene, take your camera and go on a scavenger hunt for the Mayan ruins.

Where I stayed:

My girlfriends and I wanted to avoid noisy and loud party resorts so we booked our stay at the 5-star all-inclusive Gran Melia. However, if you’re looking for a place that never sleeps and parties all day and night long than you will probably want to stay at the Oasis where they throw a huge foam party every week accommodated with purely college students. The girls and I enjoyed our stay despite the lack of air conditioning throughout the hotel and our rooms which didn’t get fixed. The food was mediocre and we were quite disappointed with the selection and quality of food. There weren’t many loungers on the beach and there was a $50 charge for booking the beds by the pool which we booked twice during our stay. As for the staff, my friends and I felt a little uncomfortable with the way they spoke to us and wish they didn’t speak amongst each other in Spanish around us which we didn’t understand. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for all the reasons I’ve mentioned, however I’d like to stay at ME Cancun the next time I visit again.

What to do: Nightlife Take the local bus outside your resort or take the cab to downtown for the nightlife. I recommend going to Coco Bongo, The City, Sweet, and Dadyo. The girls and I had an amazing time downtown. Find a host to get you in with open bar at a small price, wear your wristband because you’ll need it to drink the night away. Cancún Underwater Museum Take a swim down under and explore Cancun’s underwater sculptural museum surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. Mayan Temple Dedicated to Ixchel, Maya goddess of the moon and fertilityClimb the 365 steps, the number of days in the solar year. Learn about the Maya civilization and history of the ruins. Yamil Lu’um It sits atop a beachside knoll between the Park Royal and the Westin. Visitors must pass through either of the hotels to reach the ruins or approach it from the beach which is the easiest. Zona Arqueologica El Rey On the west side of Blvd Kukulcan, you’ll find a small temple and several ceremonial platforms. Plaza Las Americas Have an itch for shopping? Visit the largest shopping centre in Cancun which includes all of your favourite American stores like Macy’s, JCPenny, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, and more. La Isla Shopping Village An outdoor shopping centre in downtown Cancun. Bring home some naughty Mexican shot glass souvenirs for your friends but not your family and catch a movie at the Cinemark.
